Offshore wind farm proposal welcome - Jill Wareham

1.16.00pm GMT Wed 13th Jan 2010

Jill Wareham, Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for the Isle of Wight, commenting on the proposed offshore wind farm off the west of the Isle of Wight said: "I welcome the proposal by Eneco to build a wind farm off the Isle of Wight. We are told that this will produce around 900mw of power and electricity generated within the nine new off-shore wind farms around Great Britain could meet the needs of more than a quarter of the UK's electricity consumption.

"Following the icy weather of the last few days and the second gas alert in three days this serves to remind us of the need to shift our energy policy to dependence on renewables not Russia.

"This also shows that we need to approve onshore wind turbine applications - the technology is here now and should be used. People will soon wake up to the need for renewable energy when they can't have electricity at the flick of a switch."
