Labour hits poorest people
Tue 8th Apr 2008
Gordon Brown's decision to abolish the 10p rate of income tax is "an outrageous political stunt at the cost of the poorest", Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has said. The Treasury select committee, which has a majority of Labour MPs, attacked the changes too, highlighting that the combined effect of cutting of the basic rate of income tax from 22p to 20p in the pound, and the raising of the lower 10p band to 20p, would be that childless single people earning less than £18,500 would lose up to £232 a year.

More waste of tax payer's money
Thu 27th Mar 2008
Island Liberal Democrats believe this Conservative Council has wasted millions of pounds of tax payers' money on the Undercliff Enquiry. The Police investigation has come to nothing. The whole thing could have been investigated by the District Auditor at a fraction of the cost. If officers were thought to be incompetent or incapable they could have been dealt with under Local Authority personnel procedures.

Can roads last until 2011
Thu 27th Mar 2008
The Liberal Democrats welcome the news of £325 million to renew our road system on the Island. This bid was initiated by the previous administration in 2005 as the only way to secure sufficient funds to completely upgrade our roads. However, Lib Dems are concerned that the scheme is not due to start until 2011 and the money available now is not being spent by the Council.

Can the Tories be trusted?
Thu 20th Mar 2008
The Liberal Democrats on the Island do not believe the Conservative administration can be trusted. Are they just playing politics with education until after the next election when they'll carry out their threat to close rural schools? Following the decision last night to go with a new 5th option there is no guarantee that our primary schools will be saved from closure.

Lib Dems campaign for a University Campus on the Island
Tue 4th Mar 2008
A University campus on the Isle of Wight could bring major regeneration to the local economy and raise educational standards. Island Liberal Democrats believe we should be attracting Government Funds to provide a Campus on the Island where courses such as Renewable Energy technologies, tourism, geography, geology, etc could be undertaken allowing our young people to study degree courses nearer to home.
